The event which this story refers to happened in the year 1919. The story itself is simple: two people are sitting at a goods station which is near a small town. There is no food or tobacco, no firewood, the burzhuika is getting cold and outside the gunfire is continuing. The two men are playing cards all night and talking about the meaning of human actions. They have nothing to play for, the only bid is the right to wear valenki tomorrow morning and go outside for some fresh air.
